My name is Nicholas Durkin. I am currently eighteen years old and in 12th grade. What do you think about watching movies? I like watching movies. Some of my favorites are Memento, Pan’s Labyrinth, Fight Club, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Inception, American History X, Spirited Away, and many others. I also like videogames quite a bit. Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Minecraft, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Resident Evil 4, and more. Those are my two big hobbies, but I like to try new foods and meet new people. I really enjoy going to the gym and lifting weights; in fact physical activity in general is one of my favorite things to do. Some things you should know about me are that I joke around frequently and I don’t like to sit around and do nothing under any circumstances. I prefer to be constantly on the move and doing something engaging and interesting.
I attend City Charter High School. A charter school is different from a private or public school in that it is independent of unions and it makes its own rules. My charter school runs on a trimester system, meaning we go to school throughout the year three months on, one month off. I’m going on this trip for various reasons, here’s a few: I paid for it, I want to leave the country and go somewhere I’ve never been, I would like to learn about the Latin American culture and people, I want to be able to say I’ve gone in a plane to somewhere foreign to me, and I also want to see how I manage myself away from home with a group of people for two weeks.
My biggest concern is getting a farmer’s tan and not being able to sleep because it’s too hot. I hope to gain experience in managing myself in a foreign country, to learn more about the Latin American culture and people, get a better sense of the Spanish language, and to learn about some things I didn’t know before.
